Cultivating our Witness and Service in Christ:

The Latest News!

December 2018

Cherished Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

With deep love and gratitude to God for the past year, I write to you now as we begin to enter the heart of the Nativity season and the New Year! Thank you for your friendship, prayers and support that have been sustaining our efforts to this day!

From our very beginning, Saint Catherine’s Vision (SCV) has been striving to spiritually encourage and educate women and men who have been endeavoring to follow Christ. We have been building relationships and consulting with groups of persons interested in the various ways women (and men) participate within the life of the Church.

With this in mind, I wish to update you on two important developments.

Firstly, we are delighted to announce that we have submitted for publication our collaboratively written book: Encountering Women of Faith, Volume III. We are deeply grateful to the compassionate God, who has blessed us to complete this long-awaited book. Our previous two volumes in this series have been and are still, very well received.  This new addition to the series demonstrates our growing sensitivity and appreciation of the lives of women saints through history and the mercy or compassion (“eleos”) of God. Each chapter in its own way witnesses to the saints’ reception of divine healing and empowerment to “hear the word of God and do it” (Luke 11:28), despite turbulent times and challenging personal contexts.  We are very pleased, even up-lifted, with how this book has turned out!  We pray that our readers will agree!   As the Lord blesses, we anticipate its release early in the New Year. We thank the director of Holy Cross Orthodox Press, Fr. Michael Monos, for helping us by sharing his rich editorial experience, through his patience, and creative brilliance; especially with the design of the new cover and general presentation-style of the book.

Secondly, we are pleased to announce another educational offering! We are electronically re-circulating as an educational “diakonia”, Orthodox Women Speak: Discerning the ‘Signs of the Time’s’. This book offers a penetrating introduction to vital themes related to the participation of women in the life of the Church. In celebration of its 20th year publication anniversary, the book is now available on the SCV website. With much joy, we encourage you to tell others about this unique, cost-free educational resource!

Published in 1999, this book is the product of ground-breaking, officially sponsored, international Orthodox Women’s Conferences that took place in Damascus, Syria (1996) and Constantinople/Istanbul, Turkey (1997).  From all over the canonical Orthodox world women were invited by their regional hierarchs to serve as official representatives of their local churches. Whole-heartedly affirming the conclusions of the historic 1988 Rhodes, Greece Inter-Orthodox Symposium on Women, the official statements from the Damascus and Constantinople conferences present a stunning global consensus expressed by faithful female representatives of Orthodox regional churches that invites thorough consideration today.

Presentations delivered during the conferences are included as articles in the book. These offer very timely engagement regarding several concerns including:

  • The participation of women in the life of the contemporary Church,
  • Jesus’ relationship with women,
  • Women in the early Church,
  • Saintly women and Orthodox spiritual life,
  • Orthodox women in theological studies,
  • Human sexuality and the body,
  • The ordination of women to the diaconate,
  • Women and the priesthood
  • The challenges and opportunities of growing up Orthodox
  • Contemporary Spiritual challenges
  • and much more . . .

Contributors include: official greetings of His Beatitude, Patriarch Ignatius of Antioch (of blessed memory) and His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew; as well as: Dr. Elizabeth Behr-Sigel (of blessed memory), Mother Maria Rule, Rev. Dr. Thomas FitzGerald, Dr. Kyriaki Karidoyanes FitzGerald, Dr. Despina Prassas, Dr. Sophie Deicha, Dr. Constantine Yiokarinis, Christina Shaheen Reimann, Deborah Malacky Belonick and others.

We believe the research, results and the exchange of information expressed throughout Orthodox Women Speak, will encourage faithful Orthodox Christians, to consider more deeply the many ways the thrice-holy, compassionate God calls women (and men) to serve within the life of the Church, today!

Lastly, I wish you to pray for and assist SCV with our ability to better “hear the word of God and do it” (Luke 11:28). On behalf of SCV, I am asking you now to consider helping us with our on-going work. Grounding our efforts in prayer, we collaboratively and deliberately develop initiatives in education, dialogue and service, which strive to help the Church better be the Church for our time and context. Since our inception, with utmost accountability to the Church, SCV has been dutifully facilitating the witness of Rhodes (1988) and accountable to the affirmations from the conferences of Damascus (1996) and Constantinople (1997). Please, visit our website to review the scope and depth of our work!

Of immediate need, is our desire to build on the impact of our previous two volumes of Encountering Women of Faith.  It bears repeating that we are overjoyed that Encountering Women of Faith, Volume III will be released in this new year!

We are seeking your financial assistance to help us make better known the witness and ministry of holy women through history and into our times who have been studied in Volume III! We ask for your help in our effort to distribute, market and launch Volume III.  Kindly consider making a one-time or monthly sustained donation to help complete the launch of this fresh witness, as well as to nurture our ministry to the next level.

We humbly invite you to reflect on your concerns for the Church, both for today and for the future . . . and prayerfully consider our ministry! Prayerful support and financial assistance from our friends and extended spiritual family, will better enable us to attend to our commitment to “the building up of the Body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:12).  It is our joy to be of service in this manner!

In advance, we extend our heart-felt thankfulness for your prayers, friendship and financial support!

With gratitude and appreciation, on behalf of Saint Catherine’s Vision,

Presvytera Kyriaki

"Let us praise Catherine the radiant bride of Christ, guardian of Sinai, our helper and supporter. By the power of the Spirit, she silenced the arrogance of the ungodly. Crowned as a martyr, she now implores great mercy for all."
